by the way, i hadn’t really looked at it before, but some of these have comment threads. [maybe they all do]. is it just me or does anyone else want to throw up after reading a couple?

videos and inspirations …
i was looking for some images of emilie simon for a painting that i’ve been thinking about. particularly images from this video, “dame de lotus”:
wandering youtube, i ran across this video. it’s one of my favorite bjork songs.
i don’t usually watch music videos on television, and i don’t really actively seek them out on youtube unless it’s something like this. so this was new to me. such a beauty that was.

in honor of women’s history month …
metro is having a special presentation at their corporate offices. nine of my works of art will be on display for this celebration.
also in honor women’s history, i have several works up at m.e.c.a.
. . . .
i finished an ambitious fabric project i’ve been working on for several days. well, the ink part, anyway. there’s other stuff i need to do that requires at least a week’s time. also working on “cathleen”, and enjoying that. i haven’t started the guitar yet, but i’m waiting till the dust settles after the sister in law leaves [the house is in sort of a disorganized mess. well, not mess, just things are being constantly moved as muddle our way through projects. my room in particular is sort of the catch all and i want a good clean working space before i even begin to tackle that. i have already concluded that i'll need to clear off the table i normally keep my paints on while i work and use that as the surface for the instrument. i'm so jazzed about getting started, though there's a fair amount of prep work before i even think of beginning to lay down any real substance of a painting.]
. . . . . .
tonight it’s Southern Culture on The Skids at the Continental Club with one of my favorite gals. tomorrow my sister in law comes to town, and if she and her friend are up to it, i’ll see this show again.
. . . . .
i paid $3.45 for a gallon of gas this morning. this is no bueno. and there is no excuse. supposedly, the war is over and there haven’t been any hurricanes or natural disasters in recent history. what gives? and why isn’t anyone else pissed about this? last time i paid that much for gas, it was during out Rita evacuation … and i thought we were the victims of price gouging during a time of emergency. how is this becoming so commonplace that it’s acceptable? i’m at this rate, it costs me ten dollars a day to go to and from work.
hd-dvd loses to blu-ray …
… but hd-dvd users are the real losers.
ugh. i learned this the hard way. my recent purchase of 2001 space odyssey and a clockwork orange are incompatible with the x-box 360, ps2 and the mac. :\
although i’ve purchased dvd’s since we got the new tv, they were regular format and being so cheap, i overlooked the low compression digital choppiness. for xmas, i got the latest harry potter film in high definition. it looked fantastic. and at $25.00 for this format, it damn well BETTER.
so i purchased online the two kubrick films mentioned above, from two different sellers, brand new and still in the shrink wrap. [at about $15.00 each, i figured i was getting a good deal]. when i put them in the three players listed above, neither worked. i notice the insert within with a disclaimer that the disc may have been made after my player and may not be compatible, to check with my manufacturer. [are you kidding me? why is this on the INSIDE? not that it would matter, as it is rather obvious that i don't research these things ahead of time] but now i’m stuck with two discs that are basically junk. i looked online and found that they don’t even MAKE hd-dvd players anymore and that blu-ray will be taking over all formats as of mid 2008 [this reminds me of the time we held on for so long to our Betamax, even though VCR's took over the industry and they no longer even MADE beta cassettes].
i don’t think i’ll be buying any more dvd’s for a while. i wasn’t particularly happy that my now impressive collection is bunko since getting the HD television. the idea of having to replace all of it with blu-ray discs makes my bank account cringe. [i think the harry potter disc was a blu-ray, come to think of it]. at any rate, the debate over which is better is over … they both suck for having done this to me.
monday
i’m having a difficult time titling these posts, can you tell?
spent the majority of the weekend spring cleaning. hauled off a lot of stuff that would otherwise do great at a garage sale to the side of the road.
me: “you’re throwing away my nintendo?”
tim: “when was the last time you played it?” [as he's dragging out MORE boxes from the garage and i sigh with exasperation].
me: “fine.”
considered listing stuff on craigslist, but do i really want people knowing where i live? not really. and i already have a ton of other stuff to do than worry about listing or replying. nothing i hate worse than spring cleaning except spring cleaning when i’m not expecting it. [read: we have relatives visiting from out of state for the first time ever.]
the site is coming along nicely. i hit a snag, though, when i checked it here at work. the images in the oil gallery load terribly slow [they're the original sized pix but scaled down by height/width, not actual file size. looks like i'm back to making thumbnails].
had lunch with nick today. it’s always great to spend time with him and it had been a while since we’d hung out. he gave me a copy of one of the latest songs he’s been working on, but my computer here won’t play it, so i’ll try it at home. i’m so proud of how far that guy has come. just yesterday we were just a “couple of kids” with stars in our eyes … seems like those stars are now in our pockets.
ETA: i came home, saw the pile of stuff looked still mostly in tact and rushed over to see if the box marked “nintendo and games” was still there. no such luck. the “children’s videos” were gone, too. sorry, carol. on the upside, we’ll be cleaning the attic in a month. i think the super nintendo [and games] is there. it’s all your’s if you want it.

migration to the second power
after a bit of research, i realized i signed up for the wrong account on wordpress. the dot com site is what i’ve been using for the rss feed, but what i reeeeeeally wanted was what the dot org site was offering … end user via my own hosting company, seamless integration with the existing site.
seeing as i’ve proven to be quite horrible at updating six06 with actual finished work and upcoming events, i needed something like this all along. it’s like LJ but directly to my site! and i’m so good at LJ. heh.
so for the past few days, i’ve been doing just that. working on the site. i love the customizable features through the admin interface. it’s just like the dot com one. the most time consuming thing up until yesterday was choosing a theme [basically a skin] that would work with what i was trying to do. so many flashy ones out there, but i wanted something simple [okay, i wanted flashy, but it clearly was not my style, the artwork was not my own and it required plug viewer side plug ins]. i opted on the sleek and simple hemingway design. although, i didn’t realize it, but it requires java. but it’s a gorgeous feature that allows you to hide some menus, so it’s worth it.
the problem now lies in how i will organize things. the hemingway doesn’t offer tagging, although the plug in installed should fix that, it’s too confusing for me to configure. the tagging feature was something i was looking forward to so it would be easy to find posts and pictures.
i’ve got a long way to go, i’m basically just trying some things out and it will probably change from what i have up right now. heck, if i get frustrated enough with organizing the images, i may just scrap it and start all over. at any rate, here’s a sneak preview for anyone who is interested: [six06.blog]
the entries were imported from the dot com site, so it’s not updated with any new posts or any new comments since then [can't figure out how to merge the two, though i doubt that's even possible]. in any case, just another thing for me to look into [as well as creating "friends only" type posts]. this particular feed may very well become defunct when i finally launch the site. pain in the ass, i know. i’ll probably lose more readers when that happens and that sucks, but i need to streamline things. i’m all over the place with the net and i want to eventually just have a few key places. it seemed like a great idea to have a big web presence when i first started the art thing, and it was, but jiminy, it’s hard to keep up with. facebook was a joke. i’ve considered deleting the old myspace account as i really don’t do jack with it, but it’s great exposure, and like lj, it’s the only way i can keep in contact with a certain few special folks.
. . . . . .
in other news, i bought a mattress. it reminds me of the featherbed we slept in at the havana. got a great deal on it, too!
i think i’ll turn in for the night.
today
i had the day off today. i started it by putting a tongue in the crockpot with some celery, garlic, carrots, onion, seasalt and a can of mexican rotel. a nice way to start off a day off … putting food to cook for hours while you go do your thing. it just so happens it was the day my commission canvas arrived at my place of business. heh. i arranged to have it delivered there since i didn’t want to miss it delivered at home or having it exposed to the weather. julian and i drove into the city and picked it up. we had lunch at Nippon and then drove around Rice and Rice Village. we headed toward home, dropped off the “canvas”, and headed over to Baybrook Mall where we window shopped. [i was a bit disappointed that the supposed "sale" Macy's was having actually jacked up the prices i saw just two days ago and were offering 10% off in addition to the "sale". and software i was pricing out online was at least ten dollars higher at the apple store. guh.]
we decided to take in a movie so we stopped at the AMC and saw Semi-Pro. funny, but as most of Farrell’s movies are, they don’t know when to stop [sometimes a joke does run too long]. has Woody Harrelson been working out? he looks fantastic.
came home, the house smelled wonderful after having the crockpot cooking all day. the lengua is so tender and falling apart. opened up the “canvas” box [i've been commissioned to paint a guitar!] also took a picture of where i am in the small gessoboard painting.

on a strangely coincidental* note, the HD version of this film came in the mail today. [ i ordered it last week because an Edible Dirt comic and subsequent conversation with the artist inspired me].
man, talk about serendipity.
*not coincidental to the scots, but just the connectivity mentioned above.

One shot is what it’s all about
Little by little, I’m getting “must watch” movies off my mental list. One of those is The Deer Hunter. It was longer than I expected, and although I’d caught scenes of the film in the past, they were usually slow. There were bits like that throughout, but being that I felt this was a character study of sorts, it’s not like the scenes were unimportant. Or more precisely, they did not seem slow in context.
Absolutely, hands down, an excellent film. The complexity in DeNiro’s character was very well done. Walken’s performance was incredible throughout. From the initial moments of comraderie to the very end, the film is worthy of the awards and accolades it has been presented.
Special Notes of Interest [from IMDB]:
During some of the Russian Roulette scenes, a live round was put into the gun to heighten the actors’ tension. This was Robert De Niro’s suggestion. It was checked, however, to make sure the bullet was not in the chamber before the trigger was pulled.
The scene where Savage is yelling, “Michael, Michael” as he is stuck in the river is actually Savage yelling at the director Michael Cimino because of his fear of rats which were infesting the river area. He was yelling for the director to pull him out of the water because of the rats… it looked real and they kept it in.
