nightbloom

the giclee canvases came in … amazing amazing amazing stuff. problem was i couldn’t find stretchers for anything smaller than 8 inches and two of the prints were under that size. the cosmonomad, which i printed at 8 x 10, looks incredibly like the real thing. a couple of coats of varnish adds to the illusion. [the giclees come very very matte. not lacking in any detail or rich quality, just ... not my thing. i like "shiny", what can i say]. two of these are currently up in my shop [which i've been busy adding items to], but this one, which i had to mount on a solid wood slat [in other words, not a frame, but a base board of sorts], measures 4 x 8 inches. [i need to find a more professional way of mounting these things, my first attempts look rather shoddy, but only from the rear, not the front where it matters. with practice, i'll get it right.]

one of the main reasons i wanted to begin doing giclees was the ability to add to them, making them originals in their own right. this small piece seemed like just the place to cut my teeth. i present, “Night Bloom”:

you can see how the texture on the print mimics that of the canvas, so it’s a surface i’m used to working on and it creates all the nuances of working on a canvas, like the “pooling” or “gathering” of pigment in the furrows. [kinda gives you an idea of exactly how small i'm working here].

the original from which this is based [talk about night and day]:

i’ll be putting it in the shop, too. just sort of behind on other things. [seems to be my theme lately ... being behind. but i do have to say this ... i FINALLY finished the taxes. i feel accomplished. and with that monkey out of the way, i might just find the desire to create now that the burden of guilt and procrastination has been lifted.]

my apologies for all the little white splotches … it’s reflected light from scanning. i told you i like “shiny”.
