hello.goodbye

i did it! i managed to move this blog into my newly created wp blog / site over at six06. the integration was seamless. and apart from a couple of bumps in the road, it was soooooooo nice. now everything is organized and clean and … and … and well, you just have to see for yourself.

i won’t be using this blog anymore, so please feel free to mosey on over to the new digs. sorry for all the mess of confusion, folks, i’ll soon be adding a new feed to the lj-syn accounts and deleting this one [that is, if i can't change it], but seeing as i had problems with that to begin with, i doubt i can change it. i submitted a request to LJ … we’ll see how soon it takes effect. [you'll see my previous posts from THIS blog, because i had the posts and comments all imported, so don't be alarmed]. with any luck, this migration will require NO effort from you … except putting up with my BS.

at any rate, thanks for sticking around. i feel much more liberated as a result, and can focus on what’s important to me. again, i’ll still keep the OJ account as it’s the best way to keep in touch with you all and read your private entries. i don’t know that i’ll be making very personal entries at the site, but if i do, you may wish to subscribe, as you’ll need, from my understanding, a password to read the protected entries. [i'm still learning about open id and such]. in the meantime, come on over and take a look, tell me what you think and feel free to drop a line :) i’ll be issuing a formal announcement as soon as i set up the redirects through six06.

OH! and if anyone knows of a plug in i can install to get my images to pop up instead of you being taken to a page by itself, i’d be more than happy to know. i can’t recall how i did it last time :( , but i know using ‘rel=”thumbnail”‘ was a part of it. hmph.

peace, y’all.

little by little

April 13, 2008 at 3:23 am (Uncategorized)

been working on a few things off and on. revisiting old styles, old friends, just for the sake of keeping busy till the next big thing hits me. haven’t yet started on tackling the guitar, though i should at least start the prep work so that when the “next big thing” DOES hit, i won’t waste time on the tedious part of this and can just jump right in with inspiration champing at the bit.

a bit of a minor scare friday kept me from going into work. tim was complaining of bit of dizziness, feeling “off” and was clammy. he thought it was a panic attack but the numbness in his hands had me worried . not wanting to take any chances, i called in and made arrangements to take him into the doctor’s office. it turned out his sugar levels were pretty high. we got a lesson in diabetic care, considered our options regarding medication [he's already on several and the doc wanted to add another, well, had already added one to which tim hadn't taken due to what he'd read about it. we're still unsure about this whole drug pushing situation. our doc's been our family physician since before he went hmo, but part of his practice is pushing drugs, an experience i've dealt with first hand and have had my reservations about.] we were hoping to have seen the other doc, who is a bit more in tune and forthright about medication. but she was unavailable. tim had an EKG done which turned out normal. he has some follow ups next week, but it all gave us quite a scare, especially since he’s at an age [and physicality] where heart disease is a very real threat. we both are.

the coworker was kind of enough to say she could hold the office down herself so tim and i came home, at a light lunch and took a nap. diabetes is such mysterious and yet common ailment. like the common cold, there is no cure. i hate that tim suffers with this. i hate that ANYONE has to suffer with this. it is such a horrible thing. i know there are worse things out there, and i should be grateful that this is all he’s got, but i can’t help but be selfish and wish he didn’t have this at all. or that there was a cure for such a thing.

. . . .

i called bettie later that evening to see if our date was still on but she’d heard that alejandro escovedo cancelled, and well, neither of us were up to going out last night anyway. instead, i went over this evening, as she was having a dinner party with some close gal pals. great food, great company and a great time was had by all. after a few hours, we wound up heading over to Pearl’s [what used to be Mary Jane's and The BonTon Room, i'm guessing] and saw Mitch Jacobs and his band. wonderful rockabilly band covering doug sahm, elvis presley, dwight yoakum and johnny cash. i couldn’t keep up with those wild dancing women, so i headed out about midnight. i’m such a wuss these days. :P

came home and spent the last few hours working.

hair stuffs

April 3, 2008 at 1:24 am (Uncategorized)

i have a pair of ratty old plastic hair combs. nothing fancy, just something i use to pull the hair back from my face. i hadn’t realized how difficult it was to find combs that i actually like. these are as close to what i crave than anything else i’ve seen at the local shops. but browsing ebay, oh oh oh …. i’ve found a treasure trove of items that i would love to possess. i just won this particular comb [it's a gorgeous 4" x  5" vintage lucite piece]:

lucite comb

i’m also bidding on a more elaborate one, similar design but with more contrast in the [faux] tortoise shell. this piece also features 22k gold paint:

gold and lucite

both are lovely specimens and i like that these can be worn to hold a lot of hair,  with the prominent parts exposed above the hair. this has lead me to look for more art nouveau inspired hair pieces and … well … what i’ve found are just way out of my price range.

i’ve seen something that has inspired me to do something very dramatic with a headpiece. i doubt i could pull it off with the proper materials and techniques [i.e. carving, jewelsetting, soldering] but i have a tendency to be creative with other materials to meet my end. [oh, granted, it's usually never as wonderful as the real thing, but i like that i gave it a try.] yet another thing to put on my list “to do”. *sigh*

when i stepped away from my search on ebay, i realized i never did get what i was actually looking for …. two small matching hair combs to hold my hair away from my face. :P

videos and inspirations …

March 29, 2008 at 2:37 am (Uncategorized)

i was looking for some images of emilie simon for a painting that i’ve been thinking about. particularly images from this video, “dame de lotus”:

wandering youtube, i ran across this video. it’s one of my favorite bjork songs.

i don’t usually watch music videos on television, and i don’t really actively seek them out on youtube unless it’s something like this. so this was new to me. such a beauty that was. :)

hd-dvd loses to blu-ray …

March 26, 2008 at 10:27 am (Uncategorized)

… but hd-dvd users are the real losers.

ugh. i learned this the hard way. my recent purchase of 2001 space odyssey and a clockwork orange are incompatible with the x-box 360, ps2 and the mac. :\

although i’ve purchased dvd’s since we got the new tv, they were regular format and being so cheap, i overlooked the low compression digital choppiness. for xmas, i got the latest harry potter film in high definition. it looked fantastic. and at $25.00 for this format, it damn well BETTER.

so i purchased online the two kubrick films mentioned above, from two different sellers, brand new and still in the shrink wrap. [at about $15.00 each, i figured i was getting a good deal]. when i put them in the three players listed above, neither worked. i notice the insert within with a disclaimer that the disc may have been made after my player and may not be compatible, to check with my manufacturer. [are you kidding me? why is this on the INSIDE? not that it would matter, as it is rather obvious that i don't research these things ahead of time] but now i’m stuck with two discs that are basically junk. i looked online and found that they don’t even MAKE hd-dvd players anymore and that blu-ray will be taking over all formats as of mid 2008 [this reminds me of the time we held on for so long to our Betamax, even though VCR's took over the industry and they no longer even MADE beta cassettes].

i don’t think i’ll be buying any more dvd’s for a while. i wasn’t particularly happy that my now impressive collection is bunko since getting the HD television. the idea of having to replace all of it with blu-ray discs makes my bank account cringe. [i think the harry potter disc was a blu-ray, come to think of it]. at any rate, the debate over which is better is over … they both suck for having done this to me.

monday

March 24, 2008 at 2:43 pm (Uncategorized)

i’m having a difficult time titling these posts, can you tell?

spent the majority of the weekend spring cleaning. hauled off a lot of stuff that would otherwise do great at a garage sale to the side of the road.

me: “you’re throwing away my nintendo?”

tim: “when was the last time you played it?” [as he's dragging out MORE boxes from the garage and i sigh with exasperation].

me: “fine.”

considered listing stuff on craigslist, but do i really want people knowing where i live? not really. and i already have a ton of other stuff to do than worry about listing or replying. nothing i hate worse than spring cleaning except spring cleaning when i’m not expecting it. [read: we have relatives visiting from out of state for the first time ever.]

the site is coming along nicely. i hit a snag, though, when i checked it here at work. the images in the oil gallery load terribly slow [they're the original sized pix but scaled down by height/width, not actual file size. looks like i'm back to making thumbnails].

had lunch with nick today. it’s always great to spend time with him and it had been a while since we’d hung out. he gave me a copy of one of the latest songs he’s been working on, but my computer here won’t play it, so i’ll try it at home. i’m so proud of how far that guy has come. just yesterday we were just a “couple of kids” with stars in our eyes … seems like those stars are now in our pockets. :)

ETA:  i came home, saw the pile of stuff looked still mostly in tact and rushed over to see if the box marked “nintendo and games” was still there. no such luck. the “children’s videos” were gone, too. sorry, carol. on the upside, we’ll be cleaning the attic in a month. i think the super nintendo [and games] is there. it’s all your’s if you want it.

migration to the second power

March 23, 2008 at 1:48 am (Uncategorized)

after a bit of research, i realized i signed up for the wrong account on wordpress. the dot com site is what i’ve been using for the rss feed, but what i reeeeeeally wanted was what the dot org site was offering … end user via my own hosting company, seamless integration with the existing site.

seeing as i’ve proven to be quite horrible at updating six06 with actual finished work and upcoming events, i needed something like this all along. it’s like LJ but directly to my site! and i’m so good at LJ.  heh.

so for the past few days, i’ve been doing just that. working on the site. i love the customizable features through the admin interface. it’s just like the dot com one. the most time consuming thing up until yesterday was choosing a theme [basically a skin] that would work with what i was trying to do. so many flashy ones out there, but i wanted something simple [okay, i wanted flashy, but it clearly was not my style, the artwork was not my own and it required plug viewer side plug ins]. i opted on the sleek and simple hemingway design. although, i didn’t realize it, but it requires java. but it’s a gorgeous feature that allows you to hide some menus, so it’s worth it.

the problem now lies in how i will organize things. the hemingway doesn’t offer tagging, although the plug in installed should fix that, it’s too confusing for me to configure. the tagging feature was something i was looking forward to so it would be easy to find posts and pictures.

i’ve got a long way to go, i’m basically just trying some things out and it will probably change from what i have up right now. heck, if i get frustrated enough with organizing the images, i may just scrap it and start all over. at any rate, here’s a sneak preview for anyone who is interested:  [six06.blog]

the entries were imported from the dot com site, so it’s not updated with any new posts or any new comments since then [can't figure out how to merge the two, though i doubt that's even possible]. in any case, just another thing for me to look into [as well as creating "friends only" type posts].  this particular feed may very well become defunct when i finally launch the site. pain in the ass, i know. i’ll probably lose more readers when that happens and that sucks, but i need to streamline things. i’m all over the place with the net and i want to eventually just have a few key places. it seemed like a great idea to have a big web presence when i first started the art thing, and it was, but jiminy, it’s hard to keep up with. facebook was a joke. i’ve considered deleting the old myspace account as i really don’t do jack with it, but it’s great exposure, and like lj, it’s the only way i can keep in contact with a certain few special folks.

. . . . . .

in other news, i bought a mattress. it reminds me of the featherbed we slept in at the havana. got a great deal on it, too!

i think i’ll turn in for the night.
